Axon 3 is a drum synthesizer plugin by Audio Damage for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS, driven by a sequencer built like a small neural network. Seven neurons each count the trigger pulses they receive, and when a neuron's count passes its threshold it plays its drum voice and sends a pulse to every neuron it is wired to, so a few connections and threshold settings build interlocking rhythms without programming a single step. Trigger likelihood and ratcheting add variation, and pitch quantizing to 45 scales makes melodic patterns easy. Each neuron's voice started as a model of the Audio Damage Boomtschak analog drum module and adds FM, two waveshapers, a resonant filter, and a six-oscillator cymbal source from Tattoo, and the voices can modulate one another over shared FM and AM busses. A full mixer, a stereo delay, a Rough Rider compressor on the main output, MIDI in and out, and four stereo outputs complete it. Available as VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP for desktop, and AUv3 for iPad. Priced at $89 USD with no DRM, no subscription, and a perpetual license.

Start from the Initialize preset, wire the first neuron to two others with thresholds of 2 and 3, and listen to the pattern shift as their counts drift apart. Turn on pitch quantize for a few voices, pick the minor pentatonic scale, and let the network play a bassline against the drums. Lower the trigger likelihood on the hats and add a little ratchet likelihood for rolls that come and go. Send one voice to the FM buss and let another receive it for clangy, bell-like hits, or set the noise section's mix toward its metallic oscillators with a short decay for tight hats. Set a neuron to MIDI only to drive a drum rack in your DAW, put the kick on its own aux output for separate processing, and reset every four measures to keep the pattern in phrase.
What is Axon 3?
Axon 3 is a drum synthesizer plugin with a sequencer built like a small neural network. Seven neurons trigger seven synth voices, each neuron firing when the pulses it receives pass its threshold, with trigger likelihood, ratcheting, scale quantizing, a mixer, a stereo delay, a Rough Rider compressor, MIDI in and out, and four stereo outputs.
How does the neural network sequencer work?
The clock sends a pulse to the first neuron on every 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 note. Each neuron counts the pulses it receives, and when the count passes its threshold it resets, plays its voice, and sends a pulse to every neuron it is wired to. Different thresholds and connections make the neurons fire at different rates, which builds a rhythm without a step grid. Trigger likelihood and ratchets add variation, and the network can reset on play or every 1, 2, 4, or 8 measures.
How is Axon 3 different from Axon 2?
Axon 3 has a greatly expanded synth voice based on the Boomtschak analog drum module, pitch and scale quantizing, an extensive randomizer, the cymbal oscillator from Tattoo in the noise section, a Rough Rider compressor on the main output, and trigger likelihood and ratcheting in the sequencer.
Can Axon 3 drive other instruments over MIDI?
Yes. Each neuron can send a MIDI note when it fires, as well as or instead of playing its own voice, so Axon 3 can sequence a drum rack or other instruments. Incoming MIDI notes can trigger a voice directly or add a pulse to a neuron, and MIDI learn assigns the notes.
Does Axon 3 work on iPad?
Yes. Axon 3 is available as an AUv3 plugin and standalone app for iPad with iOS 12 or later, sold separately on the App Store, and its presets are compatible with the desktop versions.
Does Axon 3 work on Linux?
Yes. Axon 3 is available as CLAP, VST3, and LV2 for Ubuntu 20 and later. macOS, iOS, and Windows builds are also available. All Audio Damage plugins are released for Linux alongside macOS, iOS, and Windows.
What plugin formats does Axon 3 support?
CLAP, VST3, and AAX on Windows 10 or newer. CLAP, VST3, AAX, and AudioUnit on Intel and Apple Silicon macOS 10.13 or newer. CLAP, VST3, and LV2 on Ubuntu 20 or later. AUv3 on iPad with iOS 12 or later, sold separately on the App Store. All desktop builds are 64-bit.
Can I save my own starting point?
Yes. Save over the Default preset in the User folder, and every new instance of Axon 3 starts from your settings.
Does Axon 3 use copy protection, require a subscription, or need iLok?
No. Like all Audio Damage products, Axon 3 uses no copy protection of any kind. You can install your purchase on every machine you own. It is a perpetual license, not a subscription, and there is no online activation requirement after install.
