Audio Damage PhaseThree phaser plugin interface, styled after the two-channel MuTron Bi-Phase front panel.

PhaseThree

PhaseThree

$29.00

PhaseThree is a phaser plugin by Audio Damage for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS. It is a detailed model of the MuTron Bi-Phase, one of the most coveted phaser units ever made, used on classic recordings across funk, jazz, progressive rock, and electronic music. We tracked down the best-sounding Bi-Phase we could find, took it apart, and modeled both of its phasors, down to the lag of the vactrol-driven sweep and a sweep range measured from the hardware. Each phasor runs the original's six stages or twelve for deeper sweeps, with its own depth, feedback, and sweep source. Two sweep generators, the Bi-Phase's optional expression pedal, and the original's three input routings (parallel, series, or independent left and right) cover everything from slow stereo swirl to hard, resonant sweeps. Available as VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP for desktop, and AUv3 for iPhone and iPad. Priced at $29 USD with no DRM, no subscription, and a perpetual license.

Features

  • Two phasors. Both channels of the Bi-Phase, each with its own on switch, depth, feedback, and sweep source, modeled with the vactrol-style lag on the sweep and the original's gentle high-frequency rolloff.
  • Six or twelve stages. Each phasor runs the original's six all-pass stages, or twelve for more notches and a deeper, more complex sweep.
  • Two sweep generators. Sine and Square shapes, with rates from 0.01 Hz to nearly 20 Hz on a curve that spreads out the slow settings the hardware crowds together at the bottom of the knob.
  • Expression pedal. The Bi-Phase's optional pedal is modeled as its own parameter. It can sweep either phasor directly or set the rate of Sweep Generator 1, and your host can automate it.
  • Three input routings. In A feeds both phasors from the same input, Phasor A on the left output and Phasor B on the right. Out A runs Phasor A into Phasor B in series. In B processes the left and right inputs independently.
  • Reverse sweep. Phasor B's sweep can run in reverse, so both phasors can follow one generator in opposite directions for wide stereo movement.
  • Mono and stereo. Runs mono, mono in to stereo out, or stereo.
  • Preset browser. Folders, import and export of single presets or whole folders as ZIP files, copy and paste, and 14 factory presets to start from.
  • Universal preset system. Cross-platform XML-based presets compatible across all plugin formats and operating systems, including the iOS edition. Save over the Default preset to start every new instance from your own settings.
  • Resizable vector UI. HiDPI and Retina aware, scales cleanly from a laptop panel to a large display, and new instances open at the size you last used.

Sound Design Ideas

Put both phasors on Sweep Generator 1, set Phasor B to reverse, and use In A to turn a mono guitar or keyboard into a wide stereo swirl. Switch to Out A with both phasors on twelve stages for a deep series sweep, then bring up the feedback for a resonant edge. Use the Square shape at a slow rate for stepped, two-position phasing on a rhythm part. Give Phasor A the pedal and automate it to follow a build in the arrangement while Phasor B keeps cycling on Sweep Generator 2. On a stereo pad, choose In B so each side moves on its own, or park both phasors at a low depth for a slow, subtle shimmer on a mix bus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PhaseThree?

PhaseThree is a phaser plugin modeled on the MuTron Bi-Phase: two phasors, two sweep generators, and the original's optional expression pedal, with a twelve-stage option and modern conveniences like presets, automation, and a resizable interface.

What do the six- and twelve-stage settings do?

Six stages is the original Bi-Phase phasor. Twelve stages doubles the all-pass chain for more notches and a deeper, more complex sweep. Each phasor has its own switch, so you can run one of each.

How can the two phasors be routed?

In A feeds both phasors from the same input, with Phasor A on the left output and Phasor B on the right. Out A runs Phasor A into Phasor B in series. In B processes the left and right inputs independently. Phasor B can also sweep in reverse for opposing stereo movement.

Does PhaseThree work on iPhone and iPad?

Yes. PhaseThree is available as an AUv3 plugin for iOS 9.3 or later, sold separately on the App Store, and its presets are compatible with the desktop versions.

Does PhaseThree work on Linux?

Yes. PhaseThree is available as CLAP, VST3, and LV2 for Ubuntu 20 and later. macOS, Windows, and iOS versions are also available.

What plugin formats does PhaseThree support?

CLAP, VST3, and AAX on Windows 10 or newer. CLAP, VST3, AAX, and AudioUnit on Intel and Apple Silicon macOS 10.13 or newer. CLAP, VST3, and LV2 on Ubuntu 20 or later. AUv3 on iOS 9.3 or later, sold separately on the App Store. All desktop builds are 64-bit.

Can I save my own starting point?

Yes. Save over the Default preset in the User folder, and every new instance of PhaseThree starts from your settings.

Does PhaseThree use copy protection, require a subscription, or need iLok?

No. Like all Audio Damage products, PhaseThree uses no copy protection of any kind. You can install your purchase on every machine you own. It is a perpetual license, not a subscription, and there is no online activation requirement after install.
