Enso is a looper. Not a phrase sampler, not a beat slicer: a real looper, built in the image of the pedal loopers and reel-to-reel tape systems that defined the form, then extended well past what hardware can do. Press one button and it records; press it again and you are looping. Up to 10 minutes of stereo audio (5 minutes on iOS), host-synced or free-running.

The play and record heads are completely decoupled, each with its own through-zero speed control from -4x to +4x. Play backwards at half speed while overdubbing forwards at double, and things get strange in the best way. Four sectors give you separate loop regions to crossfade between and overdub within, and a built-in effects section (tape-style saturation and hiss, filters, and chorus) can sit in the feedback path so your loop ages like tape with every pass.

Same as the rest of our catalog: Mac, Windows, Linux, and iOS. No DRM, no subscriptions, no dongles, perpetual license.

In Use...

Put it on a live input, map the transport to a foot controller with the MIDI learn page, and you have a pedal looper that lives in your DAW. That is the front door. The deeper game is the decoupled heads: record at 1x while playing back at -0.5x and every overdub lands in a loop moving the other way. Or turn on Dub In Place, push the saturation and hiss into the feedback path, and let the loop degrade a little more each pass, 'tronic-style tape looping in a plugin. We built Enso for ambient sets and it still earns its keep there: one chord, ten minutes of buffer, and a slow speed drift will carry a whole set.

Features

  • Full automatic looping engine - Simple to learn, exceedingly powerful. "One button" looping control, both host-synced and free time.
  • Independent play and record heads - Both heads have through-zero speed control from -4x to +4x, with text-entry values and selectable increment and decrement amounts. Play in one direction and speed while recording in another.
  • Dub In Place - Work like a traditional digital looper, where the input is mixed with the buffer contents and then sent to the effects, or like a tape looper, where the effects and speed changes are included in the feedback path.
  • Sector crossfading - Define four different start and end points. Crossfade between them, and overdub or re-record within them.
  • Effects section - User-controllable tape-style saturation and hiss, high- and low-pass filters, and a stereo chorus for thickening and carving your loop.
  • Full MIDI CC implementation - An assignable MIDI CC page covers most of the looping engine. Tuned for foot control, but works with any MIDI CC source, and your layout is stored with the preset.
  • Multi-format audio loader - Load AIFF, WAV, Broadcast WAV, FLAC, MP3, and Ogg in any sample rate, bit depth, and channel configuration.
  • Buffer save - Save the buffer contents as a WAV file.
  • Extra long loops - Record or load up to 10 minutes of audio (5 minutes in the iOS version) in Long Memory mode.
  • Cross-platform preset format - XML-based presets that can optionally store the buffer inside the preset. Work between multiple systems, paste a preset from your desktop to the iOS version with Handoff, share your creations, or make a preset bundle to sell, no asset management required.
  • Fully resizable Hi-DPI/Retina GUI - Vector-based and resolution-agnostic, the same on every system. Resize per instance, from postage stamp to poster-sized.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of plugin is Enso?

A looper, in the tradition of pedal loopers and tape looping systems. It records audio into a buffer (up to 10 minutes of stereo) and plays it back while you overdub, with independent speed and direction for the play and record heads, four loop sectors, and a built-in effects section.

Do I need a foot controller to use Enso?

No. Everything works from the on-screen controls, with a one-button workflow for record, overdub, and play. But Enso's MIDI learn system is tuned for foot controllers, so if you have one, mapping the transport takes seconds, and the layout is saved with your preset.

How much audio can Enso record?

Up to 10 minutes of stereo audio at 48kHz in Long Memory mode, or 5 minutes in the iOS version. You can also load existing files: AIFF, WAV, Broadcast WAV, FLAC, MP3, and Ogg in any sample rate, bit depth, and channel configuration, and save your buffer back out as a WAV.

Can Enso work like a tape looper?

Yes. That is what Dub In Place is for: it moves the effects and speed changes into the feedback path, so the saturation, hiss, filtering, and varispeed act on the loop itself with every pass, and the loop slowly degrades and evolves the way tape does.

Does Enso work on Linux?

Yes. CLAP, VST3, and LV2 for Ubuntu 20 or newer. Every plugin we make ships with a Linux build, same day as Mac and Windows.

What plugin formats does Enso support?

Windows 10 or newer: CLAP, VST3, AAX. macOS 10.13 or newer (Intel or Apple Silicon): CLAP, VST3, AAX, AudioUnit. Ubuntu 20 or newer: CLAP, VST3, LV2. iOS 12 or newer: AUv3, on the App Store. All desktop builds are 64-bit.

Does Enso use copy protection, require a subscription, or need iLok?

No. Audio Damage does not use copy protection of any kind, and never will. Install it on every machine you own. Perpetual license, no subscription, no iLok, no online activation. You buy it, it is yours.
